Ashokan High Point
Sunday November 6th.
This is a pleasant hike up an isolated mountain that overlooks NYC's first and largest reservoir and offers excellent late fall views from its natural, uncleared summit. The trail follows an old carriage road along the Kanape Brook followed by some stiff climbs via a footpath to the summit, once the planned site for a hotel in the 1800s. Notice the stone walls and foundations along the way. After 2.5 miles, you reach the low point on the ridge connecting High Point and Mombaccus Mountain, a scenic spot to rest. The loop trail around the summit will include some moderate and steep descents.
Distance: 9 miles round trip.
Meet at the Park and Ride area by the Kingston Thruway circle at 9AM to set up a carpool (46 miles roundtrip, limited parking). Motorcade leaves at 9:15AM. Those not carpooling can join us at the trailhead at 9:45; hike will leave at 10:00 sharp. Daylight Savings ends Saturday night, so be sure to set clocks back and get an extra hour of sleep! Heavy or steady rain will cancel (call my cell phone if in doubt).
For all interested, we can trek back to Kingston and recharge our batteries at Keegan Ales.
